Step 1: Selection of the Kitchen Sink
There are a variety of kitchen sinks available for selection to homeowners. Material may differ, size may differ, and thickness may differ but generally, the type remains mostly the same. Either single bowl or double bowl kitchen sinks are available in the market.
Single Bowl Kitchen Sink
A single bowl kitchen sink, as the name suggests, has a single large basin for washing dishes.
Advantages:
- These sinks have a large surface area that is suitable for washing large pots and dishes.
- As there is no separation in the sink itself, it is easy to clean the sink afterward.
Disadvantages:
- The absence of separation makes it difficult to wash multiple dishes at a time.
- One task can be performed at a time. For example, if one is to defrost the meat by putting it in the sink, there is no room left to wash the dishes. Similar examples also come to mind that match the above example.
Double Bowl Kitchen Sink
A double bowl kitchen sink, as the name suggests, has two basins in a single unit. The size of both basins can differ.
Advantages:
- These sinks have been a popular choice due to their functionality and multi-tasking.
- These sinks are suitable for washing dishes in one basin and rinsing them in the other. It makes tasks easier.
Disadvantages:
- The size of the sinks requires a large space for installation. Therefore, they are not suitable for small kitchen spaces.
They can be more difficult to clean due to the presence of a divider.
Step 2: The Installation of the Kitchen Sink
The installation method matters the most after selecting the type of the kitchen sinks. There are two types of installation methods for the kitchen sinks:
- Top-mount or Drop-in Type
- Undermount Type
Top-mount or Drop-in Type Kitchen Sinks
A top-mount or drop-in kitchen sink is installed by fitting it into a cut-out section of the countertop. The edge or rim of the sink rests on the counter while the basin fits into the hole. These sinks are commonly chosen for kitchens due to their simple installation process and lower cost compared to other sink types.
These types of sinks are easy to replace or upgrade because they are not fixed on the counters.
It is important to note that some top-mount or drop-in kitchen sinks have pre-built holes in them for sink mixer installation while some don’t.
Undermount Type Kitchen Sinks
An undermount kitchen sink is installed beneath the countertop. The counter is above the sink. The installation gives a smooth and continuous surface between the counter and the sink basin.
These types of sinks carry high installation costs and they are not easy to replace or upgrade because they are fixed below the counter.
Undermount kitchen sinks have no pre-built holes in them for sink mixer installation.
Step 3: The Type of Piping System
The types of piping systems in the kitchen determines what types of sink mixer will be feasible for the kitchen. There are two types of piping systems installed in the kitchens.
- Above the Counter
- Below the Counter
Above the Counter
In the “above the counter” type of piping system, the hot and cold water points are visible, and a wall-mounted type of kitchen sink mixer is installed. The installation of the kitchen sink mixer resembles that of the bathroom wall mixer. This type of installation gives the kitchen a traditional look.
Below the Counter
In the “below the counter” type of piping system, the hot and cold water points are not visible and a deck-mounted type of kitchen sink mixer is installed. The installation of the kitchen sink mixer resembles that of the bathroom basin mixer. This type of installation gives the kitchen a clean and minimalistic look.
Step 4: The Selection of the Kitchen Sink Mixers
After selecting the type of kitchen sink, its installation method, and the type of piping system, the main task is the selection of the right kitchen sink mixer.
