Bib Cocks FAQs

Q. What is a bib cock?

A bib cock is a wall-mounted tap that has one inlet and one outlet and its flow is controlled by a knob; it is generally used in areas like gardens, garages, and laundry rooms. Note that it does not mix water.

Q. How do bib cocks work?

They have three components that are assembled to function:

  • Bib Cock body
  • Brass cartridge
  • Knob or head

Firstly, the body has an internal seat on which the seat of the cartridge rests when the bib cock is closed. Next, the cartridge is tightened into the main body and a knob is attached to the cartridge to operate it with ease. When you rotate the knob anti-clockwise, a gap develops between the cartridge and the body seat, allowing water to flow towards the outlet

Q. What is the difference between a bib cock and a tee cock?

Although both the bib cock and the tee cock have the same function and similar working components, the only difference lies in the location of the outlet and the knob. In bib cocks, the knob is located in between the inlet and outlet while in tee cocks, the outlet is located in between the inlet and the knob.

Q. What is the difference between a bib cock and a nozzle cock?

Essentially, nozzle cocks are bib cocks with a nozzle attached to their outlet.

Q. What material is used in the bib cocks?

SaniTecH uses brass as the base material for bib cocks because brass does not rust and is safe for health.

Q. What should I do if I notice a leak in a bib cock?

It is best practice to turn off the water supply to the leaked fittings. Water dripping can damage the tiles and marble in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor spaces. Afterward, locate the leak. It can be in any one of the three areas:

  • From the connection between the piece and the piping system
  • From the cartridge
  • From the outlet

First Case: tighten the fittings and use rubber seals to prevent leakage.

Second Case: tighten the cartridge to see if the leak stops. If not, then replace the cartridge.

Third Case: tighten the knob. If the leak doesn’t stop, then replace the cartridge.

Q. What is the standard size of bib cocks?

Bib cocks usually come in standard sizes like BSP 1/2 inch, which fits most plumbing systems.

Q. Is the bib cock easy to install?

Yes, it is designed for easy installation and can be fitted to existing plumbing with basic tools.
